Practical diagnosis
Is this a date, a number, or text?
A cell can display January 1 while holding a numeric date, ordinary text, or a formula that returns text. Start by duplicating the sheet. Keep the original column and work beside it; formatting alone is not evidence that a conversion succeeded.
A three-cell diagnosis In an empty worksheet enter =DATE(2026,1,1) in A1, =46023 in B1, and ="2026-01-01" in C1. In an Excel workbook using the 1900 system, the first two have the same numeric value. In Google Sheets they also match. The third is text. If Excel uses 1904 dates, DATE returns a different number; use the date-system guide before interpreting raw serials.
In Excel, =ISNUMBER(A1) reports TRUE for a numeric value and FALSE for the text example. =ISTEXT(A1) distinguishes text explicitly. A numeric result is only a storage diagnosis: an invoice number can also pass ISNUMBER. Establish that the column actually represents dates from its documentation or a known record.
For inspection, temporarily format a copy as a number with several decimal places. In Sheets use Format > Number; Excel provides number formats in Format Cells. A value such as 46023.5 carries a fractional part that a date-only display can hide. Do not round or overwrite it yet.
Expected results and next moves Our three-cell example deliberately avoids a typed slash date. Under the stated system, numeric DATE and 46023 should agree, while the quoted formula preserves its exact text. Compare =A1=B1 to check the two numeric examples: expected TRUE. The example is a documented-semantics check, not a report of a live Excel or Sheets test.
If the number represents the correct date, change its display only. If the text represents a date, first identify its ordering and convert in a helper column. If the numeric date is wrong, return to the source; changing the display cannot reveal whether someone intended January 2 or February 1.
Keep calculation and presentation separate In Excel, TEXT creates text output, even when the result looks exactly like a date. Reserve it for labels or an explicitly text-based export and retain the numeric source for calculations. Do not turn an entire working date column into presentation text just to standardize its appearance.
Before moving on, record the source column, stored type, workbook date system, and one independently known date. Those four facts make later troubleshooting far more reliable than screenshots of formatted cells.
